I started learning Japanese with 'Il Giapponese senza sforzo' (2 volumes) and I recommend it. It's funny and makes you have a feeling for the language. Obviously you can't reach a high level with it, being Japanese such a complicated language. But assimil can get you converse in no time (everyday topics). I'm now learning Hebrew and Greek with assimil 'il nuovo Greco senza sforzo' e 'l'ebraico' and I like both courses. I'm a beginner in both Greek and Hebrew (15th lesson do Greek and 27th for Hebrew) but I really like them so far. The Greek one is very dense.but I love it anyway.

For me nothing beats 'Destinos: An introduction to Spanish' (1991/1992 version). Since using it first in 1998 no course has proved better in any language.

To clarify, I'm talking about all components of the course (1xtextbook, 2 workbooks, audio, video. But cd-rom not overly useful). Its very enjoyable, the story is interesting and its very comprehensive. Like FIA, it had such an impact on me i visited some of the actual filming locations in Seville in 2011 when I was there.

For French: equal 1st: Assimil NFWE: pleasant bite sized lessons, good quality small course, grammar isn't overwhelming the way it's presented. & French in Action (all components): comprehensive like Destinos. 2nd place: Fluenz French - great for drilling, lots of content, best computer based program for language learning i've come across yet (doesn't touch on advanced topics though) Dutch: Hugo Dutch in 3 months is a great introduction to the language. It's straight-forward with a good amount of exercises.
